How You Can Achieve ANY Goal (Goal Setting 101)


Goal Setting starts with habits, and habits come from discipline. Having the discipline to create useful habits will take your life in directions perhaps thought unattainable, but rewarding and worthwhile.

So how do we get from wanting to improve our lives to creating and maintaining useful habits? It all comes back to Goal setting. That is the key. Read on to discover how you can achieve any goal (goal setting 101).

Whether you are unhappy with the current trajectory of your life or deep down you know you were made for more, the key is to set goals. Approaching goal setting properly will actually set you up for success. It will also see you through to the achievement of your wants and dreams.

1. Set Attainable Goals

There is nothing worse than setting a goal and working your tail off to achieve it only to fall flat on your face, so far away from said goal that you get discouraged. You feel ashamed and worse yet give up entirely. That’s not self-motivating at all!

I think the perfect place to start is to set a goal, and it’s a-ok if it’s a biggie! The key is to break down that goal into manageable bits or mini-goals, activities that when completed, will only take you one step closer to your big goal.

For example, say your big goal is to lose 50 lbs. You have a big class reunion coming up in the Spring so you only have 6 months to reach that goal. This may seem daunting and discouraging. But by breaking that big goal of losing 50 lbs in 6 months down into smaller goals, you’ll not only reach the big goal faster, you’ll have fun in the process.

To lose 50 lbs in 6 months that means you will need to lose approximately 8.3 lbs each month. To lose 8.3 lbs a month is totally doable when you exercise regularly and eat clean 80% of the time. So now our mini-goal is to lose only 8.3 lbs. Doesn’t that seem much less daunting and more achievable??

Now, to increase your exercise to the point where you stick to it and have fun (yes, your workouts should be FUN), you’ve gotta find something that you enjoy doing. If going to a gym and hitting the elliptical for 30-45 minutes while you listen to Personal Development Podcasts floats your boat–get a gym membership and off you go. Look at you with all this goal setting!

But it that sounds like something you’d compare to a teeth cleaning, then workout at home! Hire an online trainer to create a workout program catered to your needs or go and grab yourself a DVD workout!

There are some fantastic beginner Dvds out there that are not much moola and if it means you’re more likely to workout doing the Hoedown do it! If having an Online Trainer at your fingertips will help keep you more accountable, then hire him/her. Do you see where I am going with this?

It doesn’t matter what you do, it matters that you do it.

Try something out and if it doesn’t make you smile when you sweat, try something else. Variety is the spice of life!

2. Expect to Reach Your Goals 80% of the time.

There will be days where you just don’t wanna do it.

Whether it’s preparing your meals or getting through a workout, you will have down days. I def have them!

When you have these down days, if you look at it as an all-or-nothing process, these slip ups and miss-steps will only lead to setbacks. (I screwed up and ate McDonald’s for lunch, my day is now completely blown so I may as well have pizza for supper too).

Instead, the key here is to aim for your mini-goal 80% of the time so when you do have your off days, it’s just that, one off day. Life has ups and downs. No amount of planning will help you avoid these times.

If we don’t acknowledge that some days life just gets in the way, you are setting yourself up for a big let-down, maybe even sideswiping you so off track that you don’t get back on. On your bad days, know that tomorrow is another chance to make it right, get back on your clean eating/workout horse and keep going.

3. The Joy is in the Journey!

Setting your goal and achieving it is one thing, but if you fly right through life only focused on said goal, you are gonna miss out!

Take a look back at a past goal you set and reached. When you look back, you don’t just remember achieving that goal, you also remember the journey getting there, right?

A feeling of accomplishment comes from the challenges and difficulties you overcame. If you love the journey, and open your mind to loving the journey, you’ll love your life. This ties into finding a workout that you love to do, instead of pushing yourself to workout hating it the whole time. You won’t stick with it. As humans we are aces as quitting things we hate doing, it’s in our DNA.

Or maybe eating veggies “ain’t your thang”. Try a new veggie each week.  If it appeals to your tastebuds, Google recipes of many different ways to eat that veggie! And if it makes you gag, well at least you tried! #nothingventurednothinggained

Remember, when it comes to setting and achieving your goals, consider what you can reasonably achieve and when. This is where we comes full circle with setting mini-goals once we have set our big goal. It’s the small and steady pace that wins the race.
